Caregiver thinks Vickie may have had a light seizure this afternoon. No one witnessed it but there are some signs it may have happened. Caregiver suspects it might have been the result of a change in manufacturer of the anti-seizure medication.
A Dr. was contacted; Vickie was given a sedative and appeared to be sleeping normally this evening.

Vickie made the trip to GSMC today and had the EEG sensor/recorder removed. It will be several weeks before we receive the findings.
Vickie returned to her residence this evening. In a rare bit of good timing, the foster care residence had been without power for nearly 24 hours due to the severe storm. The power was restored just before she arrived.

Vickie traveled to GSMC Wednesday afternoon to have the mobile EEG recorder attached. Thursday she returned to GSMC to have the batteries recharged and the sensors resecured.
Having the sensors secured to her head with adhesive was somewhat stressful for Vickie but afterward she seemed to ignore them and the large bundle of wires and the recording device she needs to carry.
She will spend Thursday night at home so her episodes can be closely monitored and timed into the recorder.
Friday, all the paraphernalia will be removed and the responses will be evaluated for possible problems.

Vickie kept her Dr.s appointments, one Monday with her GP and one Tuesday with her neurologist. She will discontinue one medication that doesn’t appear to be helpful. Another medication for seizure control was increased.
Vickie will soon do a 48-hour EEG test to determine if she is having small seizures often.

Since Vickie has been at her new residence she receives most of her nourishment via the feeding tube. Last night the tube that was nearly a year old failed and was promptly replaced with a new one of a different type. The new one is a larger diameter and should accommodate better the food that is prepared for Vickie.

Vickie’s foster home caregiver is an ardent believer in organic healthy food. She eschews processed and junk food. Caregiver probably would have disapproved of Vickie eating a Burger King hamburger and French fries this evening while staying at home overnight. Dessert was a chocolate pie brought by Vickie’s brother-in-law.

Vickie was discharged from the hospital this morning. Instead of returning to her home she went to a private foster care home a short distance away. She will stay there for several weeks.
It’s difficult to determine the reason but Vickie’s demeanor seems to have improved in the last two days. Her appetite has improved along with an increase in her sense of self-awareness. She is talking more and remarking on her own situation.

Today is a bittersweet anniversary. Two years ago today Vickie was stricken with the first of the devastating injuries to her brain. Although she has not recovered as much as we hoped she would, she is still making small increments of progress. Sometimes the improvements are so subtle we don’t notice until we take a look back and compare how things were before.

Vickie seems to be in a coherent state about half of the time, the remainder of time she is very agitated and complains of pain constantly. The pain is not relieved by any pain medication. She often experiences the anxiety episodes in the early evening; consequently she ends up not eating her dinner.

Vickie's day started well. In the afternoon she lapsed into her anxiety mode and was not a very good guest at her sister's home.
One year ago today, Vickie returned to her home for a single night stay for the purpose of determining if her caregivers would be able to take care of her away from the hospital setting.

For the last two weeks or so Vickie’s behavior has been, at best erratic. Times of unusual coherency interspersed with episodes of anxiety, in which she refuses to eat or relate appropriately to those around her. This morning followed the regular pattern in that she wasn’t able to eat breakfast. This evening Vickie was talkative, much more than normal, had a good dinner and made remarks that indicated she was beginning to be more aware of her situation.

All went well with the tube procedure this afternoon. Vickie probably won’t notice much difference but her caregivers will find the new improved one makes it easier to dress and move her without the tube hanging out and getting in the way.
Vickie is having more times when she is very alert and responsive. She can regress at other times, which can be disheartening for those around her.

Vickie had another pleasant day. A sister brought her a nice dinner.
It’s been one year since Vickie left the skilled nursing facility for the last time. January 31st of 2005 she went to the R.I.O. for therapy, which was intended to ease the transition of returning home to stay. The therapy, like every other task she attempted, was disrupted by the ever-present nausea episodes. That problem has been entirely absent for six months. Some of the things Vickie did a year ago that we considered remarkable then are now ordinary everyday events not deemed noteworthy.

The new medication Vickie started taking this week doesn’t seem to be helping. There also appears to be some minor negative side affects, but it might be coincidence. We will wait a few more days for the desired results to materialize before making a decision whether or not to continue with this drug.
